Salon Products and Services Grew Slightly Last Year

The salon services and salon products business grew just slightly last year according to a new industry report.

Total U.S. salon services and salon retail sales grew by 2 percent in 2017 to $63 billion, according to the 2017 Professional Salon Industry Hair care Study from Professional Consultants & Resources, according to Salon Today.

However, the number of salons in the United States declined by 5 percent over the same period to total nearly 257,000 salons.

Hair color in salons slowed due to high costs and a growing number of women embraced their natural gray. Family-economy salons grew, and sales of hair color, shampoos, conditioners, hair sprays, hair styling products and specialty products all increased as well.

Cutting and styling grew at a low 2.3 percent as people got fewer haircuts. client visit frequencies decreased, and more heads were done at lower prices at family-economy chains and rentals. The number of blow-dry bars grew at a rate of 25 percent.

Trends showed traditional salons and mall chains closing, while the number of family-economy chains and high-end barbershops grew.

For example, Great Clips registered 4.5 percent growth and Sport Clips had growth of 10.2 percent. Both of these family-economy chains took market share away from traditional salons, according to the study.

Salon suites also enjoyed rapid growth.

Sales of salon retail haircare products grew due to products for hair color protection and new types of oils, hair/scalp masks and treatments.

Styling product sales increased by mid-single digits, as clients continued home hairstyling with newer, more efficient styling tools.
